The first book my son loved enough to not try to eat while we were reading it was Barnyard Dance! by Sandra Boynton. It didn’t take me long to realize why: the animal sounds. While you can incorporate animal sounds into any book you read with your child–see a picture of a cow and say “Moo”–when you’re functioning on little sleep it’s often much easier to follow an author’s cues. Not only that, but Boynton’s animal sounds have a nice flow to them. Seriously. She uses “Quack” in just the right places. Unfortunately, it seems that infants can actually grow tired of doing the same thing over and over–not too long ago my son started swatting the book away every time I brought it out. So I’ve been on the hunt for other equally captivating books featuring animal sounds and we’re now honking and barking our way through Mommies Say Shh! by Patricia Polacco and My Very First Book of Animal Sounds by Eric Carle. Both are hits–for the moment. If you have any other books to recommend, let us know!
